Garden of Eden

Back in the late 50's we lived in a house that stood on this lot near down town Eden, Texas, a small ranching-farming community with rocks for soil and mesquite trees and cactus for vegetation. It certainly didn't look like this then! We had a flock of banty chickens that would roost in the trees ( not this many trees) and a windmill next to the house for water! No AC of course so we slept with doors and windows open. The sound of the windmill turning and the sucker rod going up and down was so peaceful! It pumped into a big wooden tank and when that would overflow the sloshing of water over the edge and down the wood was beautiful. I slept beside an outside door and one night our dog chased a skunk up to it and he sprayed through the door and all over me. Back then it wasn't unusual for kids to come to school smelling like skunks! You had to go get lots of tomato juice and bath in it to cut the smell! It didn't look like the Garden of Eden and sure didn't smell like it! But the sound of that windmill and water was heavenly!
